“A pump is a pump is a pump”, some would say.  But this is not the truth and may even be a dangerous assumption to make.  Not all pumps are created equal.  In fact, even if a pump is shiny and new, this will not guarantee that you will be dealing with machinery that will not contaminate your product and potentially even tarnish your name.

The food and beverage industry is built on reputation, off the back of consumer trust.

Consumers need to have faith that what they buy is sanitary and of the highest quality. One only needs to consider the recent “listeria hysteria” to be reminded of how bad for business it can be to lose this trust. If you’re using an inferior pump, not only are you flirting with a “listeria hysteria” reputation but potentially a lot worse!

Are you pumping your products with poison?

Even if the pumps you are using are shiny stainless steel, this doesn’t mean they are as sanitary as you’d like them to be.

Many stainless steel pumps still contain dead spots, areas in which microbes and dangerous bacteria like listeria, E.coli or salmonella can get a firm footing and begin to thrive.

You need pumps that are not only stainless steel but which are also electropolished so that there is no surface area for these dangerous elements to be able to take hold.

One contaminated pump can lead to countless contaminated products.

How well does your pump CIP?

It’s simply not practical to completely dismantle a pump every time you want to switch its use to something else or clean it.  This is why so many manufacturers have made it a common practice to clean in place (CIP) their pumps as and when they need to.

The problem is that not all pumps are designed to be cleaned in place and even after being flushed several times, still contain traces of what was previously pumped. Imagine a garlic-flavoured litchi juice scenario, for example.

You’ll need a superior pump that is designed to be thoroughly cleaned as it is with no risk of residue contamination from the previous product.

3A/EHEDG Endorsements

Does your current pump come with international certifications and endorsements? Well, it should.

EHEDG, the (European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group) is a European-based non-governmental organization that is devoted to the advancement of hygienic design and food engineering and certified pumps that they endorse are obviously the ideal ones to have.

With European approval in tow, why not get American accreditation for your pumps too with 3A certification. EHEDG and 3A compliant pumps would arguably be the finest selection for anyone who doesn’t want to compromise on quality.

Breakdowns and maintenance could cause contamination

Things fall apart - It’s a basic tenet of life. But it is what falls apart which distinguishes it from the rest. If one of your pumps’ rubber components fail, you can be sure that a batch or two of your valuable product will be destroyed or rejected due to contamination.

Pump technology that is not fit for the application costs money, whichever way you look at it. It causes an increase in production losses and could lead to a poor-quality product that could even make your valued customers sick (or worse) and ruin not just a batch but your entire business.
