Without the right pieces on the board, you will never win the expansion game.

Right now in Belgium, everybody would love to sell and grow. It’s all about expanding, expanding, expanding. Rapid expansion is the number one on the agenda of every boardroom meeting. However, you cannot win a game of chess with just one piece, or even one clever move.

You need a strategy and you’ll need all the pieces to gain the advantage.

For quite some time, I have worked for major financial institutions and have more recently joined the new technology gambit, bridging the old and new world together for a winning outcome.

These are the four moves you must make to come out a winner:

1. Anticipate & innovate (have access to the right pieces and move them timely)

In the start-and scale up environment, including Fintechs, it’s all about innovation and disruption. Not only is it easy to fall behind with these new developments but there is also the risk of making the wrong move completely if you don’t correctly anticipate the direction that things are going.

To stay a few moves ahead of the curve you need foresight as well as insight and hindsight. That is how to play the game strategically. Experience coupled with innovative thinking.

2. Funding and financing (if you can’t afford the pieces, you cannot win)

Accelerated growth and expansion has great value, which is why it comes at a cost. Funding and financing are what allow the pieces on the board to play out. But it is so much more than just throwing money at a problem. Funding and financing must be strategically coordinated or you’re moving pieces around the board with a blindfold on and hoping for the best.

Start-and scale-ups require “flexible” resources in order to evolve rapidly and establish a solid financial structure, as well as efficient internal processes. These things are an investment as everything plays out when finances are handled strategically.

3. Consider Sustainability & ESG (...more than climate warming !)

Global warming is turning up the heat in the world of start and scale-ups too. Companies that are not showing up to demonstrate sustainable initiatives and joined efforts to improve the ecosystem, are being presented with increasingly more barriers to entry.

Financial penalties and other expenses notwithstanding, ignoring ESG could be a fatal move when your opposition is preferred due to their superior sustainability efforts.

4. Stay abreast of the Regulatory, Compliance & Governance space (rapidly changing and demanding while necessary).

Every game comes with a strict set of rules and there are consequences when these rules are not adhered to.

The rules that start-and scale-ups must adhere to are those in the regulatory, compliance and governance space. These are non-negotiable if you don’t want to be disqualified, which in this case would result in immeasurable losses.

Getting professional CFO guidance as you navigate these ever-expanding rule books is essential to ensuring a better chance of winning. With expert guidance, your gameplay will allow you to be more than just another pawn in a complex game.
