W hen it comes to the environment, Data Centres have a black mark against their name. The world is looking at you closely and if you don't have a green image, compliance officers and environmental activists see red.
One rack consumes as much energy as nine households. This is a problem for many reasons, not least of all the fact that your over-use of power limits the number of new customers you can take on board. If you can decrease your PUE it also saves you money. A decrease of 10% in your PUE leads to increased profit.
I began in 1986 as a system supplier and process control engineer for Du Pont and Unilever. By 2007 I noticed that the brand new data centre industry was still in early development compared to the process control industry, which was significantly more advanced in terms of software and efficiency. Today, 14 years later, customers are more demanding - they want more visibility but to be held accountable for less. Moreover, the software efficiency has still not kept up.
Today, I am a European Thought Leader in the Data Centre space, using my experience and knowledge to create innovative solutions on improving Data Centre performance.
Here are five points I’d like you to consider, which we will expand on in a short series of emails.
- Outages: A Data Centre nightmare
If you do a search on Google, you will see a number of big-name outages (several every day) that have occurred. For example, British Airways suffered a $102 million loss during an outage.
- SLA breaches can cost you a fortune
Big cloud players who rent large amounts of space have high expectations. For example, the temperature cannot increase by 27 degrees and breaches are expensive. They can cost as much as several hundred thousand Euros.
- You're losing a fortune
You're losing 5% - 10% of your income by not billing for power consumption. Human error, broken or misconfigured equipment and miscommunication loses and complicates contracts and bleeds profits.
- You don’t know enough about your capacity management
It can be as scalable as your data centre itself. If you buy too early or too late, it can cost you additional OPEX and CAPEX, resulting in a performance decrease or even an outage.
- Data centres don’t know what the next PUE improvement steps are
Ignorance is NOT bliss. What you don’t know is costing you productivity, increasing consumption and impacting your profit margin.
In order to prevent that and be in the know, you should be in touch.
