Electrical Engineers:

Keep on wasting weeks building proposals. Keep on churning out dull lighting designs the same old way.

Wondering why you're not winning?

Thought Leader:

Gerhard Moolman, is an industrial engineer who spent a large part of his career as a management consultant in the financial service and manufacturing sectors. For the past 11 years Gerhard has built ALTSA as a major player in the local lighting industry.

As an electrical engineering consultant, you probably wake up at the first light of every day and look for new ways of beating your competition and winning another RFP. If you’re not getting it right, then it’s likely that you’re stuck in the dark ages when it comes to the lighting products and solutions you’re using.

You need a lightbulb moment.

If your lighting isn’t state of the art, efficient and compliant, you’re probably experiencing tender load-shedding. The more tenders you get out, the more successful you will be. The problem is they see you as just another guy tendering for yet another job.

66% of your time is wasted, and 66% of the high-level designs you build never get used. Those that are used, have snag lists that take hours to fix. You’re trying to do this on your own, and you’re wasting your own time, which, as we all know, means wasting money.

However, time is limited, and you're just another tiny circuit in a giant board full of other engineers looking for jobs. You must stay ahead of the curve, or you won’t catch a circuit break.

Freeing up your time from lighting design, getting that design right and making life easier for you is what we are about. We give you quality, and we can also save you 18% of your time.

You're bidding for a job, and you want to come in at a lower cost, but you want your credibility to remain in the spotlight - we’ve got some bright ideas to share with you.

I understand these things because I am an engineer myself; I know what you're going through. I have worked on some of the most significant projects in SA (like the entire Netcare range of hospitals and Mediclinic). I’d like to add some spark to your tendering potential with some thoughts from years of experience in the lighting business.

Here are six key issues to contend with on the dark side of tendering for building or electrical projects:

1. Your time being wasted

When you’re not working with experts, your lighting design process can seem complex and arduous and can come with many risks involved if you can’t guarantee the quality of your lighting. If you get it wrong, the buck stops with you, and you have nobody else backing you up and taking responsibility. You’re the bright spark that has to source the right products and ensure that your lighting is energy-efficient and produces compelling illumination that will please your clients.

Can you confirm that you are employing the correct and latest lighting techniques? Can you be sure that it complies with the specs that were given?

Doing it by yourself creates too many steps along the way that can go wrong. You need all the professional assistance you can get, or you may darken your reputation.

2. Saving enough on those sky-rocketing electricity bills

Nowadays, it’s all about carbon footprint and the battle to get buildings to be sustainable and efficient fast enough. Are you managing your power consumption per square meter down? Have you upgraded to LED and other more advanced and newer lighting technology?

Old tech simply has a bigger carbon footprint.

As engineers in Africa, we like to consider ourselves world-class. Yet, in Europe, they are way ahead of us in green building design.

Here in South Africa, our green star rating is mostly nowhere. That doesn’t have to be the case.

3. Not using the leading edge in lighting tech

As I said, old tech is not efficient, it costs more, and it keeps you in the dark ages.
You need to upgrade and look to Europe as the benchmark. SA is very inefficient in comparison. If we are really on par with the rest of the world, why are we still using old tech that isn’t compliant?

You need a supplier that understands what it is to be an Energy Savings Company (ESCo).

The new design tech software can help you stop taking too long with your designs.

Why aren’t you using the leading-edge software? This is how your competition impresses the customer and gains favour over you because they have something you don’t.

4. The risk of non-compliance and not having the proper certification

How long do the components of your lighting solutions last? Is it sustainable? It’s your reputation at stake when the lighting you provided has a short lifespan and has to be replaced, or something even more dramatic goes wrong. Certification defends sustainability and protects against risk.

Certifications and compliance are there to protect you and your customer, and without them, you have no quality safety net. They ensure that your lighting is made from the right materials with the right electrothermal characteristics.

It’s there for your peace of mind.

You don’t want to be associated with products with limited or inferior functionality. Never mind worst-case scenarios like fire risk, being hazardous to human eyes and other potential toxicity.

The possible outcome? 1. Legal implications. 2. Losing customers. 3. Insurance risk.

5. Having the wool pulled over your eyes

You think you know what real quality is, but you might have been misinformed. You need expert advice from people who have been providing lighting solutions to the biggest and the best, as well as the engineer who’s kicking your butt with tenders.

Traditional standards are less important today.

They’re not of a high enough standard compared to global standards. New standards have taken over that critical role in sustainability and functionality.

6. Lighting companies that can’t even service their own lights

You need a lighting company that can be onsite during installation. An absent lighting company that doesn’t care about the final outcome can mean dark days ahead.

You need lighting partners that are much more than suppliers.

You need a company that will take full responsibility for installation when things don’t go to plan. You need someone backing you. To become the largest lights installation company in Africa, that’s what we’ve always done. We’ve been right there beside our engineers and had their backs when it comes to installation and maintenance.

Let us help you keep your name in lights.
